The journal brings together the humanities, arts, social sciences, and computing to treat AI as a situated social and cultural practice. The journal's inaugural issue, "Cultures of AI Interdisciplinarity”,  argues that interdisciplinary AI work requires more than simply adding a social or cultural researcher to a technical team. The contributions cover critical technical practice, civic engagement, friction in AI research, and hybrid human–AI approaches to studying social and cultural questions.

In this online discussion, four contributors to the inaugural issue will discuss the future of interdisciplinary AI, introduced and chaired by the journal's co-editors.
