The UvA Data Science Centre is sponsoring a limited number of seats for a free, hands-on workshop on key machine learning techniques using JASP. Learn how to classify, predict, cluster, and evaluate fairness, all in one day.
Event details of Crash Course in Machine Learning with JASP
Date
2 July 2025
Time
09:00 -17:00

This workshop offers an accessible introduction to key concepts in machine learning, using the user-friendly machine learning module in the open-source statistics program JASP. The workshop, offered by the JASP team, is open to beginners in statistics and computer programming. No prior knowledge of JASP is required.

Participants will explore popular techniques such as k-nearest neighbors (KNN), random forests, and boosted regression trees, applying them to real-world datasets. You’ll also learn how trained models can generate predictions for new data.

The full-day programme offers a smooth, fun, and interactive introduction to machine learning, with a focus on intuitive understanding and practical application. Through a mix of short lectures, guided discussions, and hands-on exercises, you’ll explore key techniques such as classification, regression, and clustering, and learn how to implement, interpret, and evaluate models using JASP. The day concludes with a session on fairness and discrimination in machine learning, followed by a Q&A and wrap-up. By the end, you’ll be able to confidently apply machine learning techniques to new datasets, interpret the output and report your results.

Join online or in-person

It is optional to join online or in-person. For online participants, sessions will be held via Zoom and recorded for later access. You’ll also be invited to an online workspace where our team is available to support you and answer your questions.

What to bring

Bring your laptop with the latest version of JASP installed. Please note that lunch is not provided.

Registration

Thanks to sponsorship from the UvA Data Science Centre, participation in this workshop is free of cost. Priority will be given to DSC members and UvA researchers. If space allows, MA students are also welcome to join. In case of oversubscription, participants will be selected based on background and motivation. You will receive confirmation of your participation by June 18.

You can register to attend either in person or online.
