    Stefania Milan is hoogleraar Critical Data Studies aan de afdeling Mediastudies van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Ze is ook Faculty Associate (2020-2022) bij het Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, Harvard University. Haar werk onderzoekt de wisselwerking tussen digitale technologie en data, politieke participatie en bestuur, met focus op infrastructuur en agency.

    Stefania leidt het project "Burgerschap en standaardisatie in digitale netwerken" (in-sight.it), gefinancierd door de Nederlandse Onderzoeksraad. Ze is ook co-hoofdonderzoeker in het Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network "Vroege taalontwikkeling in het digitale tijdperk" (e-ladda.eu). In 2015-2021 was ze de hoofdonderzoeker van DATACTIVE (data-activism.net) en van het Algorithms Exposed (ALEX) project (algorithms.exposed), beide gefinancierd door de European Research Council.

    Stefania is gepromoveerd in politieke en sociale wetenschappen aan het European University Institute (2009). Voordat zij bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam in dienst trad, werkte zij onder meer bij het Citizen Lab (University of Toronto), Tilburg University, en Central European University. In 2012 richtte ze het Data J Lab op (momenteel inactief). In 2017-2018 was ze Associate Professor (II) van Media Innovation aan de Universiteit van Oslo. In 2017 was ze medeoprichter van het Big Data from the South Research Initiative, dat onderzoek deed naar de impact van dataficatie en surveillance op gemeenschappen in de marge.

    Stefania is onder andere de auteur van Social Movements and Their Technologies: Wiring Social Change (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013/2016), co-auteur van Media/Society (Sage, 2011), en co-editor van COVID-19 from the Margins. Pandemic Invisibilities, Policies and Resistance in the Datafied Society (Institute of Network Cultures, 2021).
